A tragic five-alarm fire that claimed the lives of nine people at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, is garnering nationwide attention today.
The Fall River Fire Department initially responded to reports of a fire at the facility shortly before 10 pm last night. Firefighters observed heavy smoke and flames in the front of the building and quickly made entry to rescue residents. The incident was upgraded to five alarms and nearly 50 firefighters responded to help evacuate the facility and extinguish the blaze.
Of the 70 people who resided at the Gabriel House, over 30 had to be transported to area hospitals. One remains in critical condition as of the writing of this article. Nine people have been confirmed deceased and a family notification center has been set up near the scene at the chapel of St. Anne’s Hospital.
In addition, five firefighters had to be transported for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the cause of this fatal fire is still in its early stages and is being handled by the Fall River Fire Department, Fall River Police, State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police assigned to the Bristol DA’s office. Fire officials confirmed that they are looking into factors like smoke detector functionality and building code adherence. We hope for a thorough yet timely investigation into the cause, to help prevent future tragedies and to provide the survivors and victims’ families with the closure they deeply deserve.
