On Thursday, April 28, Douglas Sheff, Senior Partner at Sheff Law, spoke at the Workers Memorial Day Commemoration at the Massachusetts State House.
As a personal injury attorney with 30-plus years of experience helping the victims of workplace injuries, Sheff has seen first-hand the “profit over people” mentality that allows so many workplace accidents to occur. That made Sheff a fitting speaker at the commemoration, which served both to raise awareness for workplace safety and to honor workers who are killed, injured or who suffer from illness on the job.
Founded by the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) in 1970, Workers Memorial Day is celebrated annually to renew the quest to win protections that make jobs safer. As the AFL-CIO notes, The Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Mine Safety and Health Act promise workers the right to a safe job. To ensure that promise is fulfilled, employers who cut corners and violate the law need to face consequences.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 2014 alone, there were nearly 3 million nonfatal workplaces injuries in the United States, as well as over 4,000 fatalities. Last year 63 workers in Massachusetts lost their lives while on the job. Sheff Law has represented numerous victims of workplace injuries, and fighting for the rights of workers has long been a passion of Doug Sheff and the entire Sheff Law team.
